About the house and the Choco Cloud Forest

Getting here. Cerro Campana is about two hours from Quito in the same general direction as Mindo. Head north on 28 towards Mitad del Mundo, and continue through Calacali. At Nanegalito, turn right and head north towards Nanegal. Travel 11.7 miles and then turn right towards Santa Marianita. After Santa Marianita, you will see the gate for Maquipucuna on the right and we are directly opposite. Near the top of the driveway bear right.

There is no public transportation that can bring you here. If you need a driver from Quito I can provide reliable contacts.

The house. The house is a rustic but comfortable two-story structure with incredible views. There are 4 bedrooms, and a sizeable common area with plenty of hammocks. The shower has hot water. Wifi too.

Climate etc. It is generally in the 70s F (21-26 C). The altitude is 1400 to 1600 meters (about 1 mile high). Usually sunny and warm in the mornings, and often rains in the afternoons or evening. In the day I wear t-shirt and light long pants, and sweats at in the evening. Be sure to pack clothes that dry easily, and tall rubber boots.

Mosquitos are not a big problem here. In the rainy season we have mosquito nets to use over the beds, but most of the time they are not needed. Chiggers are present in the area, usually in tall grass, although I haven't encountered them on the property. They can be thwarted by wearing rubber boots or tucking your pants into your socks. Showering after a long hike helps also.

Snakes are uncommon at this altitude and I don't worry about them any more than I do in the United States.
