Birding! Birding in the cloud forest is generally easier than in rain forest; the trees are shorter and the topography is steep enough that you are often looking level or down at the birds. You can see tons of birds just walking up and down the driveway. Walking up to the top of Cerro Campana gets birds of a bit higher altitude such as toucan barbet. The club-winged manakin are generally seen on the way up also. We are in the Choco cloud forest, which is separated from the Amazon area by the Andes mountains, and features many endemic species.

Here is our location on ebird We currently have 252 species. Be sure to bring your binoculars.

Our guide can also take you on trips to Amagusa (great tanager photo opportunities), 23 de Junio (umbrella birds and howler monkeys), Finca la Victoriana (the best place for cock-of-the-rock), Paz de las Aves (antpittas and more) and others. The will be extra fees for admission and transportation on those.

Hiking. There are about 5 miles of trails on the property. Several in the general vicinity of the house, and one that is longer and goes up to the top of Cerro Campana. Another follows a stream closely and is great for night macro photography, as many frogs can be found there. If you use the Alltrails app, our trail map is here. For longer hikes, you can hire a car to take you up to Yunguilla, and take one of two day-long hikes back to the house. One goes down the culunco (ancient Yumbo trail) and the other takes a higher route over Santa Lucia. Arrangements can also be made for hiking in Maquipucuna and Santa Lucia, both larger reserves.

Photography. The cloud forest has so many interesting subjects. The area is particularly rich in orchids and other interesting plants. Butterflies and other insects are abundant and varied also. And of course there is great scenery with ever changing cloudscapes.
